Overview

Cake decorating is the finishing craft on top of baking: smooth frosting, piped detail, and structural work for tiered cakes. The techniques are learnable and highly repeatable with practice.

Much of the practice can be done without baking at all — piping onto parchment and scraping it back is standard.

Getting Started

Learn to bake a level, sturdy cake first. Decorating cannot rescue a poor base.

Master crumb coating and a smooth buttercream finish before attempting decoration.

Practice piping on parchment paper, then scrape and reuse the frosting.

Chill cakes between steps. Cold cake is dramatically easier to work with.
