Houseplant keeping is indoor horticulture, constrained mainly by light. Most houseplant deaths are caused by too little light or too much water, and both are entirely avoidable once you understand them.

It scales from a single pothos on a shelf to a serious collection with grow lights and humidity control.

Assess your light honestly before buying. Most rooms have less usable light than they appear to.

Start with forgiving plants: pothos, snake plant, ZZ plant, or spider plant.

Water when the soil is dry, not on a schedule. Overwatering kills far more houseplants than neglect.

Repot into pots with drainage holes. Decorative pots without drainage are the most common hidden killer.
