It is a large, multi-disciplinary hobby: people spend years on any single part of it, and the tools change constantly.
Getting Started
Pick one DAW and stay with it for at least a year. They all work; switching constantly is the real productivity killer.
Start with stock plugins. Beginners consistently overestimate how much a plugin purchase will improve their music.
Finish short tracks rather than perfecting long ones. Completing songs teaches more than endlessly tweaking one.
Learn gain staging and basic EQ before anything else in mixing.
