Overview

Stand-up paddleboarding is among the most beginner-friendly paddle sports. On flat water most people are standing and moving within the first session.

Inflatable boards have transformed accessibility — they pack into a backpack-sized bag and are durable enough for regular use.

Getting Started

Start on calm, flat water with no wind. Wind is the main difficulty factor for beginners.

Rent or borrow first, then buy an inflatable board if you like it — storage and transport are far easier.

Wear a leash and a PFD. Separation from your board is the most common serious incident.

Paddle out into the wind and back with it, so you are not fighting wind while tired.
